What to consider when decorating the interior of your first home

Being a first time buyer can sometimes prove to be overwhelming, not only are you most likely to be applying for a mortgage, trying to find all the necessary financial details needed to apply, proving that you are worthy of a mortgage and making calculations on your future monthly payments, you may well be looking at properties that require a considerable amount of interior decoration.

Even if you are buying a new build property, there will probably be elements of the interior that you would like to adapt in order to make it your own. Therefore, take a look at the following tips from Bifold Doors UK about what to consider when decorating your first home.

Budget

Although this seems to be an obvious point, when looking at property and the expense involved, it is easy to get further away from your budget.

Ultimately, budget needs to be the first port of call when it comes to choosing the interior décor of your home. Although most of us would like the most flash, premium quality kitchen available, our budget should always take the first priority, no matter how lovely that breakfast bar may be!

Is this a design decision to last long term?

Consider how long you aim to keep your chosen interior design in your new property. If you’re simply laying down carpet and putting in new doors until you have saved enough money for that open plan construction, then perhaps, at this point, opt for cheaper carpet and budget doors.

What material do you prefer for your interior?

While some first time buyers prefer modern staircases made of glass and stainless steel, others prefer traditional timber or oak. Whatever your preference, you should ensure the materials you choose remain an in-keeping theme in the whole property, for a true, elegant ‘house style’.

At Bifold Doors UK, we sell a range of folding, sliding, French and patio doors in oak and timber, that look great in a range of properties. If you would like to opt for timber or oak doors then don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you have and take a look at our website.

Natural Timber vs Man-Made Boards

At Bi-Fold Doors UK, we use high-quality hardwood timbers in order to provide a premium product. Our hardwood timber frames are treated to ensure long life and resistance against weathering, as well as resistance against UV light and high levels of traffic and pollution.

The timber bi-fold door frames supplied by Bi-Fold Doors UK are sustainable and manufactured using premium quality wood that is sourced by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).

Although it is great to know that Bi-Fold Doors UK use premium hardwood timber, you may want to know a bit more about the differences between natural timber and man-made wooden boards, particularly if you are a bit of a wood worker and DIY advocate.

We have taken a look at Mike Lawrence’s “The DIY Guide to Doors, Windows and Joinery” (Published by The Crowood Press, 2003), with the aim to provide a bit more information on the advantages of natural timber.

The Difference between Natural Timber and Man Made Boards

Natural timber is basically the wood cut from the tree into planks of different sizes and cross-sections, while man-made boards are reconstructed sheet materials made from wood products like chippings and fibres.

More Information on Natural Timber and Why We Use It at Bi-Fold Doors UK

Trees are generally divided into two types: softwoods and hardwoods.

Softwoods derive from coniferous, or cone-bearing, trees like pine, spruce, larch and fir trees. Softwoods are generally the raw material used for house-building and used often by the amateur woodworker.

Hardwoods, on the other hand, come from broad-leaved and deciduous trees (which are, ultimately, trees that shed their leaves each year). European varieties of hardwoods include ash, beech, elm and oak, while tropical species include afrormosia, iroko, mahogany, merante and sapele.

Although, at Bi-Fold Doors UK we offer a range of hardwood timbers, including sapele, oak and idigbo, we thought we’d provide information on some others too, so that you gain a better understanding of timber and its uses.

The main reason that we do not use softwood timber at Bi-Fold Doors UK is that softwood is generally not durable enough to be used outside unless it is protected by paint, varnish or preservatives.

Hardwoods, on the other hand, vary in strength, durability and workability. The hardwoods selected by Bi-Fold Doors UK are strong, durable and easy to work with. They are still treated in order to be weather-proof and more durable, but ultimately produce a premium bi-folding door.

Hardwoods are also deeper in colour and have a more pronounced grain pattern, which makes for a bi-folding door with an attractive and high-quality appearance.

Three Things to Think About Before Purchasing Your Internal Doors

“Buying internal doors for the home? Some points to consider first”

Bifold Doors UK offer a wide range of internal doors for your home. Our internal doors are suitable for cottages, listed buildings, mansions and countryside manors, as well as offices and commercial areas.

Whether you are looking for a traditional or contemporary look, our internal doors can suit most properties.
But what should you consider before purchasing your internal doors? Here are the three main considerations you should think about before purchasing your internal doors.

Budget: Timber or Oak?

At Bifold Doors UK, we manufacture bespoke internal wooden doors in timber and oak. Oak is generally more expensive than timber and, therefore, you may wish to consider your budget before you decide on the material of your internal doors.
If you can afford it, oak internal doors offer the ultimate in luxurious living. Oak is generally agreed to be a beautiful wood and is the recommended choice for listed properties and traditional buildings with an historic feel.

Timber is less expensive and, in effect, less prestigious, but is still a high-quality product. Timber looks much more impressive in comparison to PVC internal doors and is a great alternative to aluminium if you do not want aluminium internal doors in your property.
It is worth noting that, at Windows Doors UK, we offer a complete colour and stain range for doors in both hardwoods and softwoods. Therefore, if you decided to opt for timber, you may wish for the timber to be stained in an oak effect.

Whether you are looking for oak or timber internal doors, our joinery makes all internal doors directly from FSC sustainable hardwoods and softwoods. That means, you will be getting a high-quality, luxury and environmentally-friendly product, whether your budget leads you to purchase timber or oak.

Style: There’s no limitations at Bifold Doors UK

Before purchasing your internal doors, you will need to consider the style of your property and the type of internal door that would suit it.
Some people, for example, may opt for glass sheets in the door to make the property lighter and add a more open-plan feel. Others may choose style with no glass or, perhaps, internal French doors.

We recommend that your internal doors have an in-keeping theme, where possible, to ensure your property has a sophisticated and elegant style. That said, there may be certain rooms where a different internal door would work well. For example, bedrooms tend to benefit from solid hardwood doors, whereas a kitchen or lounge could have a more sociable feel with an internal door that features a glass pane.

You can take a look at a small range of our internal door styles from Windows Doors UK by clicking here: http://www.windows-doors-uk.co.uk/internal-bifold-doors/.

Don’t forget! We can make plenty more internal door styles, as well as bespoke internal doors, for doors that are suited perfectly to you and your property.Â

Ironmongery

Handles and locks are important for both the aesthetic and security of your internal doors.
At Bifold Doors UK, we offer an extensive range of ironmongery shapes, styles and colours, and can sometimes even produce bespoke ironmongery options too!

Types of Doors for Your Home

“31st July 2015”
Types of Doors for Your Home

TAt Bifold doors UK, we offer a range of French, bi-fold and patio hardwood doors that work well in both contemporary and traditional properties.

Before you decide on which doors to opt for though, we wanted to provide some more information about the types of doors you may wish to consider. Even though we don’t sell all the following types of doors, it is essential that you consider the best doors for your property before purchasing them.

Hinged Doors

A hinged door is probably the most basic type of door and, unsurprisingly, is simply hinged along one edge (usually on the vertical side) to allow the door to pivot away from the doorway in one direction, but not in the other.
It is also possible for doors to be hinged along the horizontal edge, although this is less common. Hinged garage doors tend to benefit from the hinge on the horizontal edge.

Bi-fold Doors

A bi-fold door is simply a door that slides open, while its panels fold up and lean neatly against the wall. They were originally designed to save space and have often been used in smaller applications, including wardrobe doors. Recently, bi-fold doors have become a popular option for interior and exterior doors, to separate the rooms in a house.

Stacker Doors

Stacker Doors are doors that have two or three panels that slide the same way behind a fixed panel, which means there are no intrusive panels to obstruct.

Tilt Doors

A tilt door are the doors often used in garages. Not necessarily an alternative to bi-fold or hinge doors, but useful to know about all the same!

Screen Doors

A screen door is used in both cold and warm climates. A screen door is, ultimately, a hinged storm door (in cold climates) or hinged screen door (in warm climates) that covers an exterior door. Screen doors feature screen mesh to stop flying insects entering the house but are still fairly transparent, and allow air and light in.

Stable doors

A stable door is a door with an upper and lower section that may each be opened separately. Stable doors work particularly well in traditional country houses and barn conversions.

Sliding Doors

A sliding door is a door that does not turn on a hinge, but is drawn across. Ultimately, sliding doors slide open rather than swing open.

Roller Doors

A roller door is an overhead door that acts like a shutter and consists of many hinged together horizontal slats. The door is raised open and lowered shut. Larger roller doors may feature a motor.
